Decorating a new home together can be a creative collaboration between you and your sweetheart not to mention a wonderful opportunity to create a sanctuary where you can both be comfortable, entertain guests, and enjoy each other’s company. But striking the perfect balance and getting a plan off the ground can can also be a somewhat bewildering and overwhelming process.  Got cold feet? Here are a few tips to help you say “I Do” to sprucing up your newlywed nest.

CLEAN HOUSE

For those who are moving out of separate residences and shacking up together for the first time, you are sure to find yourself with a lot of multiples after move in day. While some things  are great to have in abundance (i.e books, lamps, guest linens) you definitely won’t need two of everything (juicers, televisions, sofas). If you haven’t already, take some time to go through the house with a discerning eye and make a list of items to donate or reallocate.  It’s much easier to visualize a decor plan in a clean space than a cluttered one, and you are sure to enjoy the added square footage without that extra microwave laying around.

PICK A ROOM

If you are upgrading from your cozy apartment to a shared home, the thought of decorating every square foot of so many rooms can sound daunting. To help make the process feel more approachable start with one room and hone your color palette and personal style there before taking on the rest of the house. Consider starting in the bedroom. Since this room is typically smaller than the living room or kitchen it is also one of the easiest rooms to set out on a decorating pilgrimage. And lets face it, most of us have been decorating our bedrooms since we were kids so this is really nothing new! Experiment with different furniture layouts, play with paint colors and textiles, and focus on striking a good balance between his and hers decor preferences. Once you’ve tackled the bedroom, you’ll have some decor experience under your belt and a better vision for the rest of the house.
